Proactive Not Reactive...

Anthony Martin sent me a link about the Evangelical Theological Society adopting the Chicago Statement on Biblical Inerrancy -- courtesy of the Christian Apologetics and Research Ministry. While I am glad to see this happen, I am concerned that it will not accomplish what needs to be accomplished, namely, the dismissal of Clark Pinnock and John Sanders from the ETS. According to the article, Pinnock and Sanders have both agreed to stand by the Chicago Statement on Biblical Inerrancy. Apparently they feel that agreeing with the statement will in no way prevent them from continuing to espouse their positive view of Open Theism. Please keep in mind that the discussion here is about the ETS and not the Church at large. Of course I consider Pinnock and Sanders brothers in Christ, however I find their idea of a reactive God repulsive.

Note: My opinions are not necessarily the same as Anthony Martin's. He simply provided me with the link.

Armed Citizen #6...

When a Harlem thug saw Margaret Johnson, a grandmother who has been confined to a wheelchair since a 2001 injury, he thought he had an easy target. The friendly Johnson said hello to the man, but according to police, he responded by grabbing her around the neck in an attempt to steal her necklace. But he had underestimated Johnson, an NRA member and accomplished target shooter who was on her way to the gun range. She reached for her registered pistol and shot her assailant, sending him running. Police caught up with Johnson's assailant half a block away. New York Post New York, N.Y. 09/09/06

Murder By Numbers...

Continuing on the theme of the importance of life, and some of the comments from Anthony Martin, I have come up with the following discussion about the idea of somehow "choosing" war casualties over abortion casualties. The idea being purported by Anthony Martin seems to be that more deaths occur via abortion than war, and because of this it is a greater evil. However: In order for the argument of numbers to be valid syllogistically one must agree to the following arguments: Syllogism A: Premise #1: Murder is always morally wrong Premise #2: Abortion is always murder Conclusion: Abortion is always morally wrong Syllogism B: Premise #1: Murder is always morally wrong Premise #2: Casualties of war are always caused by murder Conclusion: Casualties of war are always morally wrong Syllogism C: Premise #1: Murder is always morally wrong Premise #2: Less murder is less morally wrong than more murder Conclusion: Casualties of war are less morally wrong than abortion Of course Premise #2 of Syllogism C is false because it assumes that Premise #2 of Syllogism B is true (among other things), which it is not. Therefore, if we redefine Syllogism B as follows: Syllogism B1 Premise #1: Murder is always morally wrong Premise #2: Casualties of war are sometimes caused by murder Conclusion: Some casualties of war are morally wrong We will eventually come to the conclusion that murder committed in the name of war is morally wrong, while murder committed in the name of abortion is also morally wrong. However we will not discover that killing in the name of war is always morally wrong, or that killing in the name of abortion is ever morally right. Because of this inequality they cannot be used for strict numerical comparisons. One action is always wrong, and one action is not always wrong. The question should not be if we would choose abortion over war or vise-versa, but rather "Is abortion equal to casualties of war from a moral perspective?" If the answer is no, then we are free to object to abortion on all fronts and to accept casualties of war in certain cases. Obviously I believe this to be the case. I submit that the problem that the liberals are facing when they try to understand how Christians can be pro-life and pro-war at the same time is in a misunderstanding of the theology that is driving those decisions. In effect, Psalms 139, and the sixth commandment (in many cases) cannot be applied equally to a baby in the womb and a soldier in the trenches.

Animals Are People Too...

Anthony Martin's comments on Choosing The Fittest, prompted me to write this post. It felt it was too interesting to leave it hidden in the comments, away from the many eyes of my faithful readers. Although it certainly speaks to our humanity, I'm not sure the disparity in numbers can be used as a valid argument for or against any type of killing. Still, there certainly is a difference between abortion, euthanasia, and other nefarious harvesters of life, and the death that comes as a consequence of war, specifically, a just war. It is interesting to note that many theologians (liberal and conservative alike) fall into the "Thou shalt not kill" trap, believing that anyone that participates in a war is automatically breaking this commandment. The original language suggests that a better reading would be "You shall not murder". There is a definite distinction between killing in war and murder. Lest we use only one argument to dismiss the arguments of the ill informed, it is also important to look at the context in which the commandment was given. It would make very little sense for God to command his people not to participate in war, and then send them to war with thousands of people in the area. One final thought, it is also quite unintelligible to claim that as Christians we must refrain from eating animals because we are prohibited from killing! The context of, hmm, the entire Bible forbids this interpretation by any but the most liberal or self-convinced of theologians.

Survival Of The Fittest...

An interesting article from the Telegraph explains how Mr. and Mrs. Greenstreet have been able to avoid the uncomfortable situation of raising a flawed child. However, it seems to me that this process has only solved part of the problem for poor Mr. and Mrs. Greenstreet. In order to make their lives as comfortable as possible they should simply ask the doctors to give Lizzie a mega-dose of anesthesia and get her out of their hair too. Wouldn't that really be best for all involved anyway? And what of William, he may some day be the cause of more suffering, perhaps we should sign him up for a visit with Grim as well?

I'm Still Melting...

Christopher Monckton's article, Climate Chaos? Don't Believe It, in which he suggests that global warming is not the crisis that the United Nations would have us to believe, received much feedback. He has written a follow-up article and has posted several of the responses he received. Personally, I find it hard to believe the United Nations would ever try to convince the global community that something was happening that wasn't actually happening...right.

Stolen Gun Alert...

From the SIGARMS newsletter.
Please be on the look out for the shotguns listed below. On October 4th two Tennessee teams from Dyersburg and McKenzie were preparing to leave for Colorado Springs for the first ever SCTP International Trap Shooting Championships. The two teams and 5 coaches combined their equipment and guns, and sent them ahead the day before via personal ground transport. On the morning of October 4th the Coaches pulled into their hotel in Oklahoma City for a short stop. Their Ford Excursion was loaded front to back including camera equipment that was on loan from the Tennessee Wildlife Resource Agency to document the event. The FBI estimated that the Ford Excursion full of guns and gear was stolen within the first 35 minutes at the hotel. The value of the stolen guns and gear was estimated to be $120,000.

I'm Melting...

I found this interesting article at the Telegraph. Notice that the author of the article provides data to back up his conclusions. I have not looked at the data, nor do I plan to because I'm not overly interested in the subject matter at this time. However, if you are extremely worried about global warming or if you feel tree-huggers are the certain sign of the apocalypse to come, you may want to read both the article and the data in order to be better informed of either your position or the position of your enemies! Personally, if I had to choose, I would go with the apocalypse thing.
